A little preparation makes a journey to Nigeria easier and safer. Here is what to check before you leave and what to keep in mind during your stay.
Before you leave
- Check that your passport is valid for your whole journey and that you have the right visa, obtained before travel on the official portals of the Nigeria Immigration Service.
- Complete the electronic landing card at lecard.immigration.gov.ng before boarding.
- Make sure you hold a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate, and ask your doctor about other vaccinations and about protection against malaria.
- Take out travel and health insurance that covers your whole stay.
- Read the latest travel advice published by your own government, and follow the news before and during your trip.
- Keep copies of your passport, visa and vaccination certificate separately from the originals, and store a digital copy you can reach online.
During your stay
- Respect local laws and customs. Dress and behaviour that are acceptable in one region may be less so in another, especially in places of worship.
- Security conditions vary from one region to another. Follow the instructions of the local authorities, plan your journeys during daylight where possible and avoid travelling to areas your government advises against.
- Carry an identity document at all times, and keep valuables out of sight.
- Use reputable taxis or ride services, and agree the fare in advance where there is no meter.
- Drink bottled or treated water.
