Nigeria and Burkina Faso cooperate in the areas that matter most to the daily lives of their citizens. When the Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs visited Ouagadougou in December 2025, the two governments reviewed political, security and economic cooperation and agreed to sustain regular consultations and to pursue practical measures to deepen their cooperation and promote regional integration.
Political dialogue
The two governments keep a regular dialogue through their embassies and through visits at ministerial and presidential level. The Embassy in Ouagadougou prepares and follows these exchanges, and conveys the positions of the Government of Nigeria to the authorities of Burkina Faso.
Peace and security
Nigeria and Burkina Faso face common security challenges in West Africa and the Sahel. Joint responses to these challenges were at the centre of the talks held in Ouagadougou in December 2025.
Trade and the economy
Following Burkina Faso's withdrawal from ECOWAS on 29 January 2025, the ECOWAS Commission asked member states to continue, until further notice, to treat goods and services from Burkina Faso under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme and investment policy. The Embassy supports businesses from both countries that wish to trade or invest, and directs them to the competent Nigerian institutions.
Movement of people
Nigerians live and work in Burkina Faso, and Burkinabe citizens travel to Nigeria for trade, study and family. Under the arrangements announced by the ECOWAS Commission, citizens of Burkina Faso continue, until further notice, to enjoy visa-free movement, residence and establishment in accordance with the ECOWAS protocols. The Embassy's consular section assists Nigerian citizens in Burkina Faso and informs travellers about the entry rules of Nigeria.
Culture and people-to-people ties
Students, artists, traders and families connect the two countries every day. The Embassy promotes Nigerian culture in Burkina Faso and supports exchanges that bring the two peoples closer.
